Hair Loss
- New Advances Offer Hope
Treatment options for men and women facing hair loss today have come a long way in the last few years. The only options for women used to be to wear a wig, or for men to wear a toupee. The type of toupee would depend on the amount of hair loss, either a partial toupee that would cover just the top or front of the head or a full toupee that would cover the whole scalp. Many men still opt to wear a toupee, and if this is your preferred treatment it is worth buying a high quality one for the most realistic look. Quality toupees actually resemble real hair and many are even partially made from real hair. While quality toupees are the most realistic they are also the most expensive - they can cost about $800 or more. However, this is often money better spent than to purchase a cheap toupee - they may only cost about $150 but they don't look realistic. When it looks like a toupee, you would probably look better if you just went without.
Advances in Hair Loss Treatments
Fortunately, there have been many advances in hair loss treatments. Today, men and women alike with hair loss issues can benefit from new surgical and non-surgical treatments choices. Surgical methods usually provide quicker more noticeable effects, where non-surgical methods may be more subtle. It is also not uncommon to combine both surgical and non-surgical treatments for the best results.
Treatment for hair loss may also be determined by the factors causing an individual to lose an excessive amount of hair. The most common reason for hair loss is genetics, but it is important to rule out other reasons. Excessive hair loss can also be a result of serious illness or major surgery, medications, or hormonal problems. Hair loss can also result from hot oil treatments, chemicals in hair dye and permanents, or from pulling the hair tight such as in rollers, pigtails, or braids. Once you and your doctor have determined the cause of your hair loss, then you will be able to start the most appropriate treatment.
One of the most popular treatments today is non surgical bio matrix. With this type of hair restoration, additional hair is added to your own hair using a weaving process. In the areas where you are balding, additional hair is woven in with your own hair. The hair looks fuller and you are still able to see your scalp because the hair is not surgically implanted. The process is virtually undetectable and is available treatment for both men and women.
A treatment known as microscopic follicular unit hair transplants is said to be one of the most effective hair restoration methods. Follicular unit transplantation is when naturally occurring follicular groupings (units) are redistributed from the host site to the balding site. This method respects the natural hair growth patterns and the results look very natural. Treatment is used for both men and women with hair loss.
EXT (Extreme Hair Therapy) is another hair loss treatment option. The focus of this treatment is to stimulate hair growth in balding areas and restore the hair and scalp to a healthy state. Treatment works by keeping hair follicles in their growth cycle longer than usual, resulting in thicker hair growth and a slow down in the thinning process. This treatment is an option for both men and women.
Hair Loss Medical Treatments: Rogaine and Propecia
There are also two medications that are used in the treatment of hair loss. Minoxidil, marketed under the name Rogaine, is a topical treatment that can be used by both men and women. It works by slowing new hair loss and stimulating new hair growth. It is often used in combination with surgical treatments to maximize hair treatment results. The other medication Finasteride, sold under the name of Propecia, comes in a pill form and is a treatment only available for men. This medication helps to preserve existing hair and is often used by many men in combination with Minoxidil and surgical treatments for the most effective hair growth and restoration.
